Luz Divia Fierro, Colombia

If you're a fan of the red fruit + tropical brightness of Kenyan coffees, this coffee from Luz Divia's farm in Huila will knock you right out. We taste papaya, watermelon, red currant—even banana—in this lively fruit-punch brew.

About Luz Divia Fierro

Luz "Sandy" Divia Fierro and her husband Elpido grow some 50,000 Pink Bourbon trees (that's a lot!) in Huila, Colombia. It's a variety more resistant to leaf rust than other varieties, as possessing wonderful and intense fruity qualities when fully ripe. This is our second time purchasing her coffee, and we continue to be impressed by the quality and innovation. Taking a page from Luis Alberto Jojoa's playbook, Sandy has begun harvesting gradually over several days, layering her coffee during fermentation before washing and drying all the batches at once. Huila's cool evening temperatures allow this slow and steady method to bring out vibrant, tangy fruit notes within the coffee without over fermentation.

Sandy also participates in the Manos Al Grano program, which protects the most exposed laborers in the supply chain, the coffee pickers, by giving them high quality training and all the protections of legal wage workers including workers comp, minimum wage, and paid time off.
